Book Review — Rat Queens, Volume 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch

Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & SorceryRat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s done. It’s decided. Rat Queens is my new favourite graphic novel.

Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all god’s creatures for profit.

When I got started in this medium, I made the unwise decision of picking up Saga, Volume 1 first…and well, everything else hasn’t even come close since.

But now there’s this, and I love Rat Queens so much that I can’t even write a coherent review.

The characters shine in this—fleshed out, distinct, funny, charming, badass.

These are the women I want to read about.

Realistic body images, kicking ass all over the place, unapologetic for their sexuality and recreational drug use, and generally the women we deserve to see in stories.

It’s not just a gimmick though. The story and world don’t take a hit, and only bring out the best in the characters.

Rat Queens pure fun and I can’t say it any better than that. If you could distill happytimes, manufacture it, and mainline it…you’d get this.

Drugs. Swearing. Blood. Sex. So many quotable quotes. Beautiful art. Sassy, witty dialogue that’s got serious attitude.

I’m going to stop gushing and go re-read this, because the next volume isn’t out for a while and it’s killing me.

Pick this up and join me?
