For a horror novella (short story? Novelette? Fuck me, I just don’t know anymore) that has a haunted house as its central premise, Elderwood Manor is a surprisingly fun read.
The writing is confident and evocative, and I am now terrified to enter forests, which seeing as I live in the Pacific Northwest, is a dire situation indeed.
But overall, this…piece…is nothing special. It’s short enough for a quick, dark read, but that’s about it.
I recommend reading this at night, in the dark, helplessly alone. Because otherwise, what’s the point?
