This is a beautiful tale that deserves to be read.
I’ll admit up front that it’s not my usual fare of plots-upon-plots, betrayals, swords, horses, maps, magic, eviscerations, etc.
And yet I loved it.
It’s a work of beauty and you get caught up and transfixed by the story before you even realize it. Helene Wecker gently guides you deeper and deeper into a story ultimately about characters (we’re talking almost on par with Robin Hobb here).
I think that’s what did it most for me. As a lover of stories and tales, our titular heroes tangentially hit many people upon their journey and we get short (yet fascinating and remarkably deep) glimpses into their lives.
Take a chance and read this book. Don’t expect a three-act plot or much action, but instead revel in the atmosphere and enjoy the ride.
